Daze Of Our Lives

Like most people, I steal all of my ideas. There isn't an original bone in my gangly body, and the only hope I have of coming up with a new thought is cramming together two that belonged to other people. This is how I roll, and will continue to roll, but the least I can do is share my sources, a favorite being Daze of Our Lives, by Martin Archer. A series of captioned art from the Victorian era, it made ninth grade web design an enjoyable place to slack.

Whereas the thing I do thrives on simplistic juxtaposition and unneeded profanity, Daze of Our Lives made absurd artwork more absurd through actual creativity. It also followed a pretty important captioning rule (if there can be such a thing) that I try to adhere to - it didn't overtly modify any of the pictures. That means no cutting and pasting and making a some guy look like he's molesting a sheep he wasn't really molesting, and just adding commentary that could, theoretically, update the image's context. It worked for Mystery Science Theater, it worked for Daze of Our Lives, and I do it as well, so two out of three isn't bad.

Really, just browse the archives and see that captioning can be done right. It's all very inspiring, and hell, you could steal from worse.
